Chapter Twenty-One

“There’s a lot of blood coming from his mouth,” Josie said. She had her palm on Gage’s back and studied his face.

“I shink shomting cut up in dere,” Gage said, poking at his top lip.

“We better get outta here, though. You gonna be okay until we get home, Von G?” Oliver looked over his shoulder. It didn’t look like Dawson and Jeremy came after us.

Gage bent forward and more blood streamed from his mouth. He then pulled up his T-shirt, scrunched up the bottom, and held it to his mouth. He gave us a thumbs up, and we all started to get in the car.

“Sit in the front,” Oliver said.

“Recline the seat for him.” Mitch reached up front.

Gage whacked everybody away.

“I’m pine.”

“You’re all swollen and purple,” Mitch said.

We drove home as I rehashed what happened, and Mitch told us how it kind of made sense. It turned out that Jeremy was Dawson’s cousin. He must’ve called Jeremy and told him to come on down to the mini golf joint.

Oliver drove us to our house, and when we got there, all of us crammed into the little downstairs bathroom. Gage sat on the toilet (lid down).

“How are you, Oliver?” Mitch asked, leaning over me so she could touch Oliver’s jaw.

“I only got punched once. Gage got his ass kicked.”

“Did not.”

“Keep thinking that, buddy.”

“I’m going to go look for something that might help with his face. Oh, our poor Gage,” Josie said, rubbing his shoulder.

“Ow, stop,” Gage said, trying to push Oliver away.

Oliver didn’t listen and grabbed Gage’s top lip and pulled it out. He tipped his head and said, “There’s like a pool of blood up in there. What do you call that? That part, the string thingy that like attaches the inside of the lip to the gum up there?”

“I don’t know,” I said, cringing as blood dribbled out of Gage’s mouth.

“But that’s where it’s all bloody.”

“The inside of the mouth heals quickly. It’ll be pine.” Gage gingerly touched his lip.

“Here,” Josie said, coming back into the bathroom, handing Gage a package of frozen peas.

“Thanks,” he said, placing them over his eye.

“Let me see your face real quick,” Oliver said.

Gage sighed, taking the peas away. His poor precious face.

“Your mom is going to be so pissed.” Oliver took Gage’s chin in his hand and turned his head from side to side.

“I swear, I didn’t start it,” Gage said, pushing Oliver away.

“Yo,” Luca said from behind us. We all turned in his direction. “What in the hell happened to Gage?”

“Nutshing,” he said, putting the peas back on his face.

“Nutshing is something. And dude, your face too, Oliver.” Luca shoved himself into the bathroom with us and stood on his tiptoes to better see the condition of our brother’s face.

“Is it bad?” Oliver asked. He leaned over the sink and studied himself in the mirror.

Luca laughed. “Mom’s not gonna let the two of you go in public together anymore.”

“I’m not really worried about Mom,” Oliver said. He poked at the growing bruise on his cheek and winced.
